Thursday, February 6, 2014NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 85-78, at home against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany on Wednesday.
Bethany (5-15, 4-9 PAC) had a commanding first-half lead of 23-9 with 10:56 remaining in the first half. The Bison had their largest lead of the half and of the game when they led 36-18 with 5:41 to play. Westminster (11-9, 8-5 PAC) cut Bethany's lead to 42-31 after freshman Toi Brown (Youngstown, OH / Youngstown Christian) split a pair of free throws with 1:03 on the clock. Bethany led 44-33 at halftime.
Down 52-35 with 17:28 to play in the second half, the Titans mustered a 12-0 run to cut Bethany's lead to 52-47 with 13:47 on the clock. Westminster continued to battle and tied the game 68-68 after junior Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) found classmate Courtney Klein (York, PA / Red Lion) for a jumper with 5:05 remaining. Back-to-back Bison scores put Bethany in front 72-68, however a three-pointer from Titan senior Gabby Holko (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Alvernia) made the score 72-71 with 4:14 left. Bethany, however, would not let Westminster get any closer.
For the game, Bethany out-shot Westminster 52.5% (32-61) to 45.6% (31-68), while the Titans held a slight 37-36 rebound advantage.
Four Titans scored in double-digits, led by junior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) who scored a game- and career-high 19 points (8-for-11). Senior Courtney Zitt (Latrobe, PA / Greater Latrobe) and Holko followed with 13 points each, while Grandy added 10. Borts, Zitt, and freshman Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lovellville) led Westminster on the glass with seven rebounds each. Zitt also had a team-high three assists.
Sami Schott led Bethany with 18 points, while teammate Taylor Verrico had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Westminster will host Chatham on Saturday at 2 p.m. for its "Think Pink" game.
