Tuesday, January 14, 2014GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team won its fifth-straight game as the Titans won, 56-47, on the road at Thiel on Monday night.
Westminster (7-6, 4-2 PAC) had an early 7-2 lead after junior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) converted on a traditional three-point play with 16:09 on the clock. The Tomcats (3-9, 2-4 PAC) answered with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 14:54 remaining in the first half. The Titans quickly regained the lead and went on a 13-0 run, capped off by a layup from freshman Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lovellville), and led 20-8 with 10:28 on the clock.
The Titans maintained their double-digit lead and led by as much as 15 points (29-14) after a layup from freshman Shelby Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) with 1:49 left. Westminster held a 29-19 halftime-lead.
Thiel battled back and cut the Titans' lead to 40-39 with 8:07 on the clock. Westminster, who never lost the lead in the second half, led by only two points (49-47) with just over two minutes to play. The Titans sealed the victory after ending the game with a 7-0 run.
For the game, Westminster out-shot Thiel 32.8% (20-61) to 27.0% (17-63). The Tomcats out-rebounded the Titans 47-38.
Titan senior Courtney Zitt (Latrobe, PA / Greater Latrobe) scored a game-high 13 points (5-for-15). Also scoring in double-digits for Westminster was Borts with 11 points. Durbin added eight points. Senior Hannah Shaffer (Apollo, PA / Apollo-Ridge) tallied a team-high eight rebounds.
Jaclyn Watkins led Thiel with 12 points and tied with teammate Hannah Stoneman for a game-high 10 rebounds.
Westminster will host nationally ranked no. 6 Thomas More on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
