NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (by Taylor Heinrich)-- Although there have been a few high points for the Titans during this years basketball season, they would still like to be able to get some W's in on their resume.

This coming semester a player will be joining the team in hopes of helping them to get some more wins and help to get the team going in the direction they want to go, Steve Cress.

Cress returns to Westminster this coming semester to earn his graduate degree, as well as use his remaining eligibility to return to the basketball team. Standing at around 6'6", Cress should provide a solid post presence for the team that is getting out rebounded by over 17 boards a game, but Steve brings much more then just basketball skills to the table, he also brings a great deal of character and a restored drive for the game.
Last winter Cress, who had already recovered from cancer once, was told that his cancer had returned.

"During that time, I was thinking a lot about my life, and how much I missed basketball. I had been helping out coach the 9th grade team at my high school with my dad and one of my old coaches, it just made me want to come back, finish my career, use up my eligibility, and get closure with basketball."
After his recovery, there was still much work to be done to get back into playing shape. Cress credits his speedy recovery to determination, diet, and his youth. "I was younger so I responded to the treatment pretty well in general. After the treatment I started eating really healthy and started working out and was back in good shape after about 4 months."
Even though Cress is now physically able to join the team, he will not be enrolled at Westminster until the spring semester, meaning he cannot compete or practice until the completion of the fall semester. To stay in shape Cress works out twice a day, does yoga, and works with his alma mater Mars High School basketball team to ensure he doesn't loose his shot.
Steve has an opportunity to return to the court for his first game since his recovery on December 16th at home against the Hiram Terriers and will be able to participate in practice on the 14th when the semester ends. With such a short turn around Cress knows the challenges of being able to learn a new system and be in game shape, but is confident that he will be able to adjust quickly and make an impact on the team.
"I didn't look at things the same way I do now, I hadn't gone through what I've gone through now."

Now Steve hopes to return to the team and use his experiences to become a strong leader on the team and help them make a run this season.

As a freshman, Steve played at Edinboro before transferring to Westminster
