Activists oppose oil firm's breast cancer donation

Saturday, October 25, 2014

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Activists are protesting an oil and gas firm's $100,000 donation to a major breast cancer advocacy group.

The activists say the Susan G. Komen organization should refuse the donation from Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. The check presentation will take place Sunday before the Pittsburgh Steelers game. Opponents are planning to rally in a park across from Heinz Field.

Breast cancer survivor Dana Dolney is director of Friends of the Harmed, a local group that supports people who say they've been harmed by gas drilling. She says Komen shouldn't allow companies to use breast cancer publicity to improve their image.

Komen says in a statement there are "strong opinions" on the issue but adds that employees of the oilfield services firm have shown "passion and commitment" to the cause.
