Westminster College Marching Band Ready to Begin Season

Posted on Monday, September 1, 2003

The 98-member Westminster College Titan Marching Band will begin performances at the Mt. Lebanon Marching Band Festival Saturday, Sept. 13, and the Lawrence County Marching Band Festival Wednesday, Sept. 17.

"As usually, the marching band will provide pre-game and halftime performances at all home Titan football games, as well as supporting the football team from the stands," said R. Tad Greig, director of bands at Westminster College. "However, this year our first game isn't until September 20."

"The band has just completed a very grueling, but successful band camp," Greig continued. "They memorized music for the main halftime show, additional feature music and stands, while learning 28 pages of marching drill with over 1,400 steps."

The main show will consist of selections from jazz flugelhorn great Chuck Mangione, a wonderful Latin arrangement of the classic "Temptation" featuring the danceline, and some symphonic music by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. The guardline and percussion section will be featured in the selection, "Cantus."

"Each year I challenge the band more with what I ask them to play and with the difficulty and intricacy of the marching drill, and each year these wonderful students meet and seek to surpass these challenges," Greig said. "I am very proud of them, and how they represent themselves, the Music Department, and Westminster College."
