"Fragments" Exhibit on Display at Westminster College Art Gallery

Posted on Monday, September 8, 2003

Meridith Ridl's "Fragments" exhibit is on display at the Westminster College Art Gallery until Friday, Sept. 19. A closing reception and gallery talk are scheduled for Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The gallery, located in Patterson Hall, is open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

"Her exhibit is a quiet reminder to cherish our memories, and take joy in the eloquence of simplicity," said Peggy Cox, professor of art at Westminster College. "Ridl's experiences and thoughts are transformed into the universal language of soft, muted greens, grays, and aquas. She is able to use the abstract shapes merged with realist images and words that whisper her secrets to us."

Ridl earned her undergraduate degrees from the College of Wooster, and her master's from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. She also earned a Watson Fellowship for a year of artistic study in France. She has been an art instructor at the Holland Christian High School, Hope College, Kendall College of Art and Design, Southwestern Michigan College, and the University of Michigan.

"Most formats are small, and are often displayed in groups referring to pages of a book," Cox continued. "Actual doors are used, as well as fragments of wall papers to demonstrate a creative use of diverse materials to tell her story on large gallery walls. Peaceful, contemplative, and satisfying like the last thought before drifting into a sleep of dreams - this exhibit is a must for everyone."

Ridl is the daughter of Biz Hines, director of the Westminster Fund, and granddaughter of legendary Westminster and Pitt basketball coach Buzz Ridl.
