estminster College has recently received a $67,000 grant from the National Science Foundation under the "Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement" program.

"This grant funds a four-year project that will change how first and second-year chemistry courses are taught at Westminster," said Dr. Timothy Sherwood, assistant professor of chemistry at Westminster College. "We are purchasing a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), an instrument that separates compounds and detects their presence. Our students will be able to use this state-of-the-art equipment, which is an instrument of choice for separation and identification of pharmaceuticals and biomolecules."

As part of the conditions of the grant, Westminster College was required to match funds. This grant not only pays for the equipment, but also faculty training, a summer workshop, and development of new laboratory experiments."

Other faculty members involved in the grant proceedings include: Dr. Helen Boylan, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. Martha Joseph, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Peter Smith, assistant professor of chemistry.
