NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The Westminster College Department of Chemistry will host Dr. Matthew Clarke for the 11th annual Ken and Nancy Long Chemistry Lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Lakeview Room located in Westminster’s McKelvey Campus Center.

In his lecture, “Museums, Conservation, and Chemistry,” Clarke will focus on the use of physical sciences to aid in the protection of cultural treasures, uncover the methods of their manufacture and discover the causes of changes that may occur in the future.

Clarke is a conservation scientist at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution with past experience working at the National Gallery of Art. His research is focused on the use of chemical analyses to understand the composition of cultural heritage materials and the impact of conservation treatment.

The lecture series is funded by Dr. Ken Long, Westminster professor of chemistry emeritus, and his wife, Nancy, to invite chemists to speak with students on campus.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Doreen Matune at matunedm@westminster.edu or 724-946-7284.
