Westminster College professor featured in ASBMB Today magazine

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Dr. Karen Resendes, associate professor of biology at Westminster College, was recently highlighted in ASBMB Today magazine.

The magazine, a publication for members of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), featured Resendes’ role as a Spotlight Sessions speaker during the ASBMB’s 2018 meeting held in April in San Diego.

More than 200 scientists—from undergraduates to senior investigators— were selected to present their research during the sessions. Twelve of those presenters, including Resendes, were chosen for inclusion in the magazine’s September issue to generate participation interest for ASBMB’s 2019 meeting.

Resendes, who presented “Effects of Data Analysis Intensive Course on Student Critical Thinking Skills, Confidence and Post-graduation Success,” said her role as a Spotlight Sessions speaker validated the relevance and importance of her project and sparked dialogue between her colleagues.

“The research I presented on student success in my advanced cell and molecular biology course was a completely new avenue of study for me,” said Resendes. “Selection for a talk at the ASBMB annual meeting highlights the importance of pedagogical research alongside bench science in career development.”

Resendes, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2009, received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary and her Ph.D. from Brown University. At Westminster, she teaches courses in cell and molecular biology, cancer biology, and nuclear structure and function, as well as a number of introductory courses.
