The first cohort of students in the Environmental Project Management Academy (EPMA) will present the results of a solar energy feasibility study on Monday, May 7, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the New Wilmington Borough Building (134 High Street), immediately prior to the monthly Borough Council Meeting. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

The project was completed as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded EPMA Program. Through the EPMA program, students collaborate with community stakeholders as they integrate knowledge of environmental science, project management, and soft skills with project work on environmental issues relevant to the region.

Students in this year’s cohort collaborated with Mayor Sherie Babb and Council Vice President John Geidner to establish the scope of the project. Five teams of students studied solar energy implementation at five different locations owned by the New Wilmington Borough. The students will present their findings for each site at the open house and also in a written report submitted to Borough Council.

The EPMA program is funded by the NSF for three years. Projects in years two and three of the grant will focus on mineral recovery from acid mine drainage and storm water treatment through raingardens, respectively. The program is a collaborative effort among Dr. Helen Boylan, Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Alison DuBois, Associate Professor of Education; and Brian Petrus, Assistant Professor of Business.
