The Westminster College Department of Psychology will host Dr. Celia Brownell for a presentation on prosocial behavior at 11:40 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 in Mueller Theater located in McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Brownell is a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Brownell’s presentation, “The Cradle of Compassion: Early Ontogeny of Prosocial Behavior,” will review research on early developments in empathy, helping and sharing. She will discuss how such behaviors emerge and exhibit substantial development between 12 and 30 months of age.

“Dr. Celia Brownell’s ground breaking work explores the moral roots of what makes us human - our ability to show caring and sharing behaviors to others,” said Dr. Mandy Medvin, professor of psychology. “Through careful research she looks at how these behaviors develop in toddlers within the family context, and how such compassion can be fostered.”
