Westminster College placed as the 119th “Best National Liberal Arts College” in the nation, according to the new edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” rankings released Sept. 13.

“Being recognized annually by U.S. News is testimony to the quality education and learning experience Westminster provides to each student,” said Dr. Thomas H. Stein, vice president for enrollment and marketing. “Knowing the criteria used to determine the rankings, it is nice to observe Westminster’s position increasing as we strive to give the students high value learning experiences.”

Now in its 32nd year, the rankings present data gathered from and about nearly 1,400 colleges and universities across the nation. Schools are categorized as national universities, national liberal arts colleges, regional universities and regional colleges.

Within each category, scores for each of seven key measures of quality – graduation and retention rates; assessment of excellence; faculty resources; student selectivity; financial resources; graduation rate performance; and alumni giving – are weighted to arrive at a final overall score.

According to U.S. News, the results, in combination with “college visits, interviews and personal intuition,” can be used by prospective students and their parents as an aid in determining the best school for each student.
