The history program at Westminster College will welcome alumnus Carleton Young ’73 to campus to discuss the 250 Civil War letters he discovered in the attic of his childhood home.

The discussion at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Patterson Hall room 207 will focus on his book “Voices from the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War.” The event is free and open to the public.

The book is a culmination of the letters written by two brothers, Francis and William “Henry” Martin, to their parents in Vermont.

“Those letters tell stories that help to personalize a pivotal point in American history,” said Dr. Angela Lahr, assistant professor of history.

Young received an undergraduate degree in economics from Westminster College and a second undergraduate degree English from Point Park University. He went on to earn a master’s degree in history from Ohio University and a Ph.D. in the history of education from the University of Pittsburgh.
