The play “Rules of Discovery” written by Dr. Andrew Ade, associate professor of English at Westminster College, was selected from 175 international entries for the showcase production in the 2015 Pittsburgh New Works Festival (PNWF).

PNWF is a non-profit organization that supports the writing and production of original one-act plays. Each fall, PNWF produces 18 new plays during the six-week festival.

“Rules of Discovery” portrays a routine witness preparation session conducted by a pair of attorneys and a hired trial consultant. The consultant melts down once their defense witness unwittingly reveals suspicious information about the defendant in a vehicular manslaughter case.

Ade, who is teaching abroad as part of the Westminster in London program, was unable to attend the production of his play.

“My play ran in the last two weeks of September, so I was never able to see it produced,” said Ade. “However, London certainly is an honor in itself. No complaints here.”

Ade has written full-length and short plays. He is a 2012-2013 Heinz Endowments Fellow for playwriting and was the sole playwriting recipient of the 2009 Kennedy Center National Teaching Artist Grants. Ade has had residency fellowships at MacDowell Colony, The Ragdale Foundation, and The Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences.
