Dr. Sarah Kennedy, associate professor of chemistry at Westminster College, was recently published in the Journal of Chemical Education. The concept of her paper, “Design of a Dynamic Undergraduate Green Chemistry Course,” was brought to life on Westminster’s campus in the green chemistry course.

Green chemistry, or “sustainable chemistry,” is an area of chemistry and chemical engineering focused on the design of products and processes that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances.

In her paper, Kennedy explains that the course incorporates nontraditional teaching techniques and texts to educate future chemists about the importance of using green chemistry principles. Students learn to apply green chemistry principles through case studies and journal article activities, while connecting all of these resources and experiences with concept maps.

Additionally, Kennedy was featured in last months’ edition of the American Chemical Society newsletter, the worlds largest professional scientific organization.

“It’s all tied together,” said Kennedy. “To me, being a member of the American Chemical Society means access to current green chemistry information, real world cases for green chemistry, and valuable educational materials for our students.”
