Fraternity to Eliminate Debt with Homecoming Donation

Posted on Tuesday, October 21, 2014

The Zeta Lambda Chapter of Theta Chi fraternity at Westminster College received a donation of over $18,000 during Homecoming festivities Oct. 10-12.

The alumni gift will enable the local chapter to pay off its debt, including the mortgage on the chapter house, nearly two years early and allow the group to save for the future.

The fundraising campaign, spearheaded by the executive council of Zeta Lambda Alumni Corporation (ZLAC), began in March as a way to connect better with alumni.  Bob Doak '82 emailed fraternity members he knew personally and received an overwhelming response.  He and ZLAC secretary Craig Carlin '04, president Lee Scott '07 and Jeff McCandless '80 expanded the campaign to include the entire brotherhood, promoting it through social media, email, word of mouth and a website designed to monitor progress and making donating easy.

"To my knowledge, the Theta Chi brotherhood at Westminster had never undertaken such a fundraising campaign," Carlin said.  "It's a great feeling to be part of this success, which shows that when a large group bands together it can make a huge difference for the fraternity."

"The generosity of our alumni is transformational," Scott said.  "For the first time in decades the financial future of our chapter is secure.  We are able to chart a new course for our alumni, undergraduate brothers and those men who will become our brothers."

ZLAC provides financial assistance to sustain the undergraduate chapter; serves as the management group for the chapter house and property; enables the growth of the fraternal bond within the lifelong brotherhood of Theta Chi; and establishes, governs, improves and promotes the welfare of the chapter and its members.
