Students Complete Summer Internships

More than 150 Westminster College students completed summer internships in a variety of settings.
Experiences included: working with elementary and high schools; shadowing staff in operating and post-operative care; authoring an interpretive guide for mass spectrometry; attending court proceedings and doing ride-alongs with police; producing and editing promotional videos; working in congressional offices in Washington, D.C.; and assisting the historian and archivist at the Chautauqua Institute.
Jessie Klousnitzer, a senior political science major from Pittsburgh, interned in the Washington office of Congressman Tim Murphy (R), PA.
"After learning about American government for three years, I wanted to experience it firsthand," Klousnitzer said. "I was surprised how much work goes on behind the scenes before a bill can even be considered. It was good to learn what happens behind closed doors."
During her nine-week experience Klousnitzer found there was no "typical day." "There were things I did more often, like give tours of the Capitol to constituents and research legislation, but every day was different because there were new issues coming up, different bills being voted on, and new meetings to take."
Sarah Rigby, a senior sociology major from Parma Heights, Ohio, interned with the North Royalton police department and spent most of her time with the Berea court system, working closely with a probation officer.
"I was surprised when the probation officer told me how many people she worked with showed improvement," Rigby said. "I learned a lot about the court system by being part of it. The experience reinforced my decision about wanting to work with something like this."
