Westminster College Relay for Life Raised More Than $19,000

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College's annual Relay for Life raised more than $19,000 at the May 4 event.

Westminster's Relay is organized each year by the Alpha Nu chapter of national fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi. There were 16 teams and 167 participants registered before the event and a number who arrived and signed up onsite.

When not walking on the track at Burry Stadium, participants could take advantage of other activities, including a corn hole tournament, a "Minute to Win it!" game, and a local band performance. Cancer survivors and those still fighting participated in the Survivor Lap, followed by the Survivor Dinner. Luminaria in honor of survivors or in memory of those lost to cancer ringed the track for the closing ceremony.

"The success of this year's relay was more than I even expected. The amount of money we raised truly shows how much our hard work pays off in the end. I am so happy I had the opportunity of a lifetime to lead this year's Relay for Life here at Westminster College, and would be even happier to help out those in need next year," said overall chair Vincent Vecchio. "We really could not have done this without the help of the Westminster community as well as the New Wilmington community."

Vecchio, a senior history major, is a son of Peter and Patricia Matessi of Pittsburgh, and a graduate of South Park High School.

Alpha Sigma Phi, founded at Yale University in 1845, established the Westminster chapter in 1939.  The fraternity aims to be the co-curricular organization of choice for discerning undergraduate men through the provision of an enriching brotherhood experience and a full range of character and leadership development opportunities.
