Westminster College Broadcast Communications Students and Professor Honored by Broadcast Education Association

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Bradley Weaver, Westminster broadcast and digital communications lecturer, was named faculty winner for Television Feature Reporting, and broadcast communications majors Joe Ligo and Andrea Tice earned second place for Best Music Video in the 2013 Broadcast Education Association's (BEA) Festival of Media Arts.
Ligo and Tice worked with faculty in Westminster's Department of Communication Studies, Theatre and Art to produce a promotional music video for JD Eicher & the Goodnights, an acoustic rock band that includes three Westminster alumni.
Ligo and Tice undertook the project as part of a video production course taught by Weaver. Ligo and Tice wrote, directed, and produced the four-and-a-half-minute video to announce the release of "Easy," JD Eicher & the Goodnights' single from the album Shifting. The band is made up of members J.D. Eicher '09 on vocals and guitar; Ryan Kirk '09 on drums and percussion; and Dan Prokop '07 on keyboard. Completing the band is Jim Merhaut on bass.
"This is such great recognition for Joe and Andrea and their work with us. I think back to the phone appointments we had with JD Eicher in developing a concept and direction for the video. Andrea and Joe were so thoughtful as they mapped out a plan and collaborated with him," Weaver said. "While I remember I often had critical feedback and JD even pushed them hard on polishing the lip syncing, they rose to the challenge. They worked hard and created a quality project."
The video includes stop-motion animation, a required project element that Weaver added after teaching a digital photography and moviemaking cluster course last spring with Kurt Roscoe, Westminster assistant professor of media art and consultant on the video. More than 900 digital still photos taken during an eight-hour photo shoot were edited to about 90 seconds of animation in the final product.
"I'm thrilled to see them honored by the BEA. They're at the top and sharing the limelight with some major university programs that have courses focused solely on music video productions. I'll have a big smile on my face in Las Vegas as I watch Joe accept the award at the BEA Convention in April," Weaver said.
Ligo is a son of Jesse and Amy Ligo of Mercer and a graduate of Mercer Area High School.
Tice of New Castle is a recent graduate of Westminster's Lifelong Learning Program.

Weaver's video "Deconstruction on Spring Break" follows Westminster students, faculty and staff during spring break as they participated in a service work trip in North Carolina through Westminster's Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and Campus Ministries.
Weaver, who has been with Westminster since 2000, earned an undergraduate degree from Alderson-Broaddus College, a master's from the University of Kansas, and is a doctoral student in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
Weaver worked for WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh and has worked for television stations in Kansas, Missouri, West Virginia and North Carolina. He has held positions as news director, assistant news director, producer, assignment editor, videographer, field producer, reporter, photographer and segment/field producer.
