Westminster College Offers Fall Continuing Education Classes

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents, covering interests ranging from understanding football to glass painting and learning a new language.

Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals.  Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Eight personal enrichment classes are included this semester:

"Are You Ready for Some Football?" is scheduled for Mondays, Sept. 17, 24, Oct. 1 and 8 from 7-8 p.m. in Old Main, room 303.  Designed primarily for women (men are also welcome), this class teaches the ABCs of understanding America's favorite fall sport.

Rodgers and Hammerstein is scheduled for Tuesdays, Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 314. Discover the charm, beauty, humor and romance of three beloved musicals: "Carousel," "Oklahoma" and "South Pacific."

Beginning Knitting is scheduled for Tuesdays, Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. in McGill Library's Robinson Room.  Learn the basics from how to choose yarn to completing a pair of fingerless gloves.  Participants will need one skein of sport weight yarn and a pair of size 6 knitting needles.

Today's Japan is scheduled for Wednesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6:30-8 p.m. Learn proper phrases and gestures and how to have fun just like the natives. Participants should bring a notebook.

Conversational German is scheduled for Thursdays, Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 1 and 8 from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 315.  Learn how to converse in various real-life situations. Pronunciation and some basic structure of the language will also be a focus.

Social Media 101 is scheduled for Wednesdays, Nov. 7 and 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the Hoyt Science Center, room 290. Learn the basics of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and how to utilize these services to build your professional online brand.

Writing an Effective Resume and Cover Letter is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 6-8 p.m. Learn to write a cover letter that will make a good first impression and give you a better chance to land an interview. Tips on improving your interviewing skills will complete this class and will ensure a more professional job search.

Glass Painting: Snowflakes, Primitive Snowmen, Pine Branches is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Location has not been determined.  Participants should bring a glass item to paint (wine glass, smooth-sided vase) and a fine brush.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in three sessions:  Session A runs from Sept. 10 through Oct. 5; session B runs from Oct. 8 through Nov. 2; and session C runs from Nov. 5 through Dec. 8 (no classes Nov. 19-24).  Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Hatha Yoga classes run all three sessions on Tuesdays from 5:45-6:45 p.m.  Participants learn how to improve their strength, balance, respiration, and fitness level by stretching and strengthening muscles, joints, and spine.  Participants should bring a yoga mat. A blanket, yoga strap, and yoga blocks are optional.

Prop-Based Yoga classes run all three sessions on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. This style of yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to aid in achieving alignment and stability in each pose.

Zoom-Bella will run all three sessions on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.  This class is for all fitness levels from low to high and includes a combination of Latin, HipHop and Polynesian moves with the latest music hits.

Zumba© Toning is scheduled for Saturdays, Sept. 8-Dec. 10 from 10-11 a.m. This class combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in either the Hoyt Science Resources Center or Patterson Hall.

Getting to Know Your Computer is scheduled for Mondays, Sept. 24 and Oct 1 and 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Patterson Hall, room 203. This introductory class will cover terminology, using the mouse, and Windows 2007, while touching on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet.

Database Management with Microsoft Excel is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 9 and 10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 290. This class will cover Excel's database management features: sort, filter, remove duplicates, subtotal and pivot table.

Microsoft Word 2010 is scheduled for Thursdays, Oct. 11, 18 and 25 from 5:30-8 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 290.  This class is for students who have some computer experience with typing and using the mouse.  Participants will learn the Microsoft Word 2010 version while referring to an earlier version of the program.

Adobe Photoshop will be held Mondays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29 from 6-8 p.m. in Patterson Hall, room 203. This class will cover how to edit and enhance your photos while using Photoshop tools like "elliptical marquee," "magic wand," and "gradient."

Microsoft PowerPoint is scheduled for Monday and Thursday, Oct. 29 and Nov. 1 from 5:30-8 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 290. Learn to use information from the Internet on your presentations and to insert, crop and format pictures.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010 is scheduled for Mondays and Thursday, Nov. 5, 8 and 12 from 5:30-8 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 290.  This introductory class covers formatting, terminology, and how to use auto sum.
