Education Majors Led Family Math Night

Posted on Thursday, March 8, 2012

Twenty-one Westminster College early childhood education majors led math activities at Family Math Night Feb. 28 in collaboration with third-grade teacher Loraine Rice at Union Elementary School in New Castle.

The "Math Panda-Monium" theme was presented for students and their parents.  Some of the math activities included Patterns with Unifix Cubes, Skittles Math, Tanagrams, Coin Riddles, and Fraction Estimation.

The juniors and seniors are enrolled in the "Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School" class taught by Joyce Hoellein, education lecturer.  Hoellein's classes have been conducting Family Math Nights in area schools each semester since 1998.

Assisting with preparations for the evening's activities were Westminster student teachers Allyson Kepple, Lauren Latinovich, and Mallory Woods.

Hoellein, who has been with Westminster since 1994, earned an undergraduate degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and master's degree from Edinboro University.
