Music Department to Host the Pittsburgh Trombone Project in Concert Feb. 24

Westminster College's Department of Music will host the Pittsburgh Trombone Project in concert Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.
The quartet will feature the music of Jay and Kai (J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding) and Michael Davis. The first half of the program includes Winding's arrangements of "This Could be the Start of Something Big," "Side by Side," "Georgia on My Mind," and the theme from "Picnic"; Johnson's arrangements of "Trixie" and "Blue Monk"; and McManus' translations of "Israel" and "It's All Right with Me." The second half of the program will feature Davis favorites "Sebone Shuffle," "Stomper," "Pacific Daylight," "Outside Looking In," "Life Lived," "San Jose," and "Green on Blue."
Two of the group's members, Robert Matchett and Kevin McManus, are adjunct music faculty at Westminster.
Matchett, who plays tenor trombone, is band director at Seneca Valley High School. He earned undergraduate and master's degrees from Youngstown State University and has completed additional studies at Ithaca College and Eastman School of Music.
McManus, who plays alto and tenor trombones, is the founder and leader of the Pittsburgh Trombone Project, as well as the Bone Forum, a 10-trombone jazz ensemble with rhythm section, and the Collective Jazz Octet, an eight-piece jazz ensemble. He earned an undergraduate degree from Penn State University, graduate performer's certificate from SUNY Purchase Conservatory, and master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
Christopher Carson, bass trombone, and Peter Howell, alto and tenor trombones, complete the quartet.
The Pittsburgh Trombone Project is committed to raising the profile of the trombone as a chamber music instrument by demonstrating its versatility as a classical, jazz, and pop music instrument. Through writing its own arrangements and commissioning new works, the group has expanded the boundaries of the trombone quartet and widened its appeal to an ever increasing audience.
Guest musicians for the evening are: Dr. R. Tad Greig, associate professor, director of bands, and chair of Westminster's Department of Music, on trombone; the Westminster Trombone Ensemble; Dr. Dave Glover on drums; Tom Glovier on piano; Bob Insko on bass; and Mark Lusk, conductor, on tenor and bass trombones.
