French Film Festival to Show Movie Based on True Story

Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men), the fourth film in Westminster College's Tournées Film Festival, will be shown Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.
The contemporary film will be subtitled in English. A discussion will follow the screening.
The 2010 film, directed by Xavier Beauvois, won awards for Best Film (Cannes Film Festival and César Awards) and Best Foreign Language Film (London Critics' Circle Film Awards, National Board of Review, USA, and Palm Springs International Film Festival). Michael Lonsdale earned Best Supporting Actor honors at the César Awards.
A tale of faith and doubt based on a real incident, the movie chronicles the story of eight French Trappist monks living in an impoverished Algerian village. Faced with threats of violence from fundamentalist terrorists and the Algerian military, the monks must decide whether to seek safety or risk their lives and stay with the local villagers who have come to trust them and rely on their aid.
One additional film, Entre les murs (The Class), will conclude the festival Feb. 28.
The Tournées Festival is hosted by Westminster's Departments of Modern Languages and English in conjunction with the Jake Erhardt International Film Series. The festival is supported by a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange and support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the French Ministry of Culture (CNC), The Florence Gould Foundation, the Grand Marnier Foundation, and Highbrow Entertainment.
Westminster faculty involved in planning and organizing the festival are: Dr. Andrew Ade, associate professor of English; Dr. Jeffrey Bersett, associate professor and chair of Westminster's Department of Modern Languages; Dr. Leslie Kealhofer, visiting assistant professor of French; and Dr. Deborah Mitchell, professor of English and film studies.
