Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents, covering interests ranging from beginning knitting and glass painting to personal strengths and religion in America.
Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals. Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.
Eight personal enrichment classes are included this semester:
Beginning Knitting will be held Tuesdays, Feb. 21, 28, March 6, 13, 20, and 27, from 6:30-8 p.m. Learn the basics from how to choose yarn to completing a pair of fingerless gloves. Participants will need one skein of sport weight yarn and a pair of size 6 knitting needles.
Digital Photography will be held Wednesdays, Feb. 29, March 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 6-8 p.m. Explore the functions of the digital camera, study examples of other photographers, and learn to present and critique one's work. Each participant will finish with a well-composed, matted print of their work ready for display.
Glass Painting: Grapes will be held Thursday, March 8, from 5:30-9 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center 206. Participants should bring a white or clear glass item to paint (wine glass, tray, Christmas ornament).
Watercolor will be offered Mondays and Thursdays, March 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, and 29, from 6-9 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center 206. A second session will be offered April 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, and 30. Contact the Adult and Graduate Studies office for a complete list of supplies.
Strengthsquest™: Learn and Explore Your Strengths is scheduled for Wednesdays, March 14, 21, and 28, from 6:30-8 p.m. This workshop will help participants gain insight into using personal strengths and talents to achieve success, improve leadership skills, and learn more about roles within a team.
Changing Face of Religion in America will be held Mondays, April 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Special attention will be given to what is happening in this election year.
Glass Painting: Daisies, Pansies, and Leaves will be offered Monday, May 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center 206. Participants should bring two or three clear or white glass items and one stroke flat brush size 8 (made by Plaid or similar).
Personal fitness classes are scheduled in sessions, with the number of sessions and dates specific to each class (see below). Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.
Zumba© Fitness fuses musical rhythms and movement to create a dynamic workout that is designed to be fun and easy to do. Classes will be held Saturdays through June 2 from 10-11 a.m.
Line Dancing will be held Mondays, March 5, 12, 19, and 26, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Combine fun and fitness to learn basic steps, Electric Slide, and Boot Scootin' Boogie.
Prop-Based Yoga classes will be offered Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. during four sessions: Jan. 23-Feb. 18 (Session A); Feb. 20-March 17 (B); March 19-April 14 (C); and April 16-May 12 (D). This style of yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to aid in achieving alignment and stability in each pose.
Hatha Vinyasa Yoga classes are scheduled in three sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 23-Feb. 18 (A) and Feb. 20-March 22 (B - no classes March 6 and 8) from 6-7:30 p.m.; and Thursdays, March 29, April 12, 19, and 26 (C) from 6-7:30 p.m. Participants learn how to improve their strength, balance, respiration, and fitness level by stretching and strengthening muscles, joints, and spine. Participants should bring a yoga mat; blanket, yoga strap, and yoga blocks are optional.
Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in Thompson Clark Hall 205.
Getting to Know Your Computer will be held Mondays, March 5, 12, and 19, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This introductory class will cover terminology, using the mouse, and Windows 2007.
Introduction to Photoshop will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 21, 23, 28, and March 1, from 6-7:30 p.m. Learn to edit digital photos using Adobe Photoshop and other online resources.
Microsoft PowerPoint is scheduled for Monday and Thursday, April 9 and 12, from 5:30-8 p.m. Learn to be creative with presentations.
Microsoft Word 2010 will be held Mondays and Thursdays, April 16, 19, 23, ad 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This class is for students who have some computer experience with typing and using the mouse. Participants will learn the Microsoft Word 2010 version while referring to an earlier version of the program.
Microsoft Excel 2010 is scheduled for Mondays, April 30, May 7, and 14, from 5:30-8 p.m. This class covers formatting, terminology, and how to use auto sum.
