College Offers Fall Continuing Education Classes

Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents, covering interests ranging from understanding football to glass painting and learning a new language.

Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals.  Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Nine personal enrichment classes are included this semester:

"Are You Ready for Some Football?" will be held Mondays, Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, and 10, from 7-8 p.m. in Old Main 303.  Designed primarily for women (men are welcome), this class teaches the ABCs of understanding America's favorite fall sport.

"Weird and Wonderful Fall Day Trips" is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark Hall 210.  Learn something new and interesting about the area within an hour's drive.  Participants will receive a list of the places discussed.

"Cats: Lions in Your Living Room" will be held Thursdays, Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, and 13, from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark Hall 210.  Sessions cover health, nutrition, communication, and training.

Beginning Knitting will be held Tuesdays, Oct. 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, and 15, from 6:30-8 p.m. in McGill Library's Robinson Room.  Learn the basics from how to choose yarn to completing a pair of fingerless gloves.  Participants will need one skein of sport weight yarn and a pair of size 6 knitting needles.

"How to Feed a Vegetarian or Someone with Celiac" is scheduled for Thursdays, Oct. 20 and 27, from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark Hall 210.  This is not a cooking class, but will provide basics from quick meal ideas to cookbooks and online resources.

Beginning Polish Language is scheduled for Wednesdays, Oct. 12, 19, 26, and Nov. 2, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Old Main 213.  This introductory class will teach basic language with elements of Polish culture.  Some knowledge of Polish language is recommended.

Digital Photography will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, and 9, from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark Hall 315.  Explore the functions of the digital camera, study examples of other photographers, and learn to present and critique one's work.  Each participant will finish with a well-composed, matted print of their work ready for display.

"Great Canadian Authors You Never Heard of: Johnson, Bellamy, and Mowatt" is scheduled for Thursdays, Nov. 3, 10, and 17, from 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark Hall 210.  Explore the lives and works of these 20th-century icons of Canadian culture who are unknowns in the United States.

Glass Painting: Snowflakes, Primitive Snowmen, Pine Branches will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center 206.  Participants should bring a glass item to paint (wine glass, smooth-sided vase) and a fine brush.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in three sessions:  Session A runs from Sept. 12 through Oct. 8; session B runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 5; and session C runs from Nov. 7 through Dec. 10 (no classes Nov. 21-26).  Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Hatha Yoga classes run all three sessions on Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m.  Participants learn how to improve their strength, balance, respiration, and fitness level by stretching and strengthening muscles, joints, and spine.  Participants should bring a yoga mat; blanket, yoga strap, and yoga blocks are optional.

Prop-Based Yoga classes will be offered Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. during all three sessions.  This style of yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to aid in achieving alignment and stability in each pose.

Zumba© Gold is scheduled for Saturdays, Sept. 10, 17, 24, and Oct. 1.  This class will introduce the four basic rhythms used, along with modifications to increase/lower heart rate for individual needs.

Zumba© Fitness fuses musical rhythms and movement to create a dynamic workout that is designed to be fun and easy to do.  Classes will be held Saturdays, Oct. 8 through Dec. 10, from 10-11 a.m.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in room 290 of the Hoyt Science Resources Center.

Getting to Know Your Computer will be held Mondays, Sept. 12, 19, and 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  This introductory class will cover terminology, using the mouse, and Windows 2007, while touching on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet.

Microsoft Word 2010 will be held Mondays, Oct. 10, 17, and 24, from 5:30-8 p.m.  This class is for students who have some computer experience with typing and using the mouse.  Participants will learn the Microsoft Word 2010 version while referring to an earlier version of the program.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010 is scheduled for Mondays, Nov. 7, 14, and 21, from 5:30-8 p.m.  This introductory class covers formatting, terminology, and how to use auto sum.
