Mathematics Professor Taught in Summer Program for Undergraduate Women

Dr. Pamela Richardson, Westminster College assistant professor of mathematics, taught at the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Undergraduate Women in Northfield, Minn., June 19-July 17.
Richardson has been involved with the National Science Foundation-funded program for more than 10 years as a student, researcher, teacher, and mentor. This was her second summer teaching Lie theory, a mathematical discipline developed by Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie that brings together ideas from abstract algebra, topology, calculus, and physics.
Admission to the program is selective, with only 18 female mathematics students accepted. Applicants must have completed their first or second year of undergraduate work and linear algebra.
Students participated in two classes in fields of mathematics beyond calculus that are not normally available in a standard undergraduate mathematics curriculum.
Richardson, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2006, earned an undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
