Mathematics Professor Presented at UCLA

Posted on Monday, November 15, 2010

Dr. Jeffrey Boerner, Westminster College assistant professor of mathematics, presented at the American Mathematical Society's Western Sectional meeting Oct. 9-10 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Boerner's presentation, "The Kauffman Bracket Skein Module of the 3-Torus," was part of the special session on Algebraic Structures in Knot Theory.

"Three-manifolds have an associated algebraic structure based on how links can be placed inside of them," Boerner said. "The talk explored this algebraic structure corresponding to the three-dimensional torus."

Boerner's research is in topology with particular interest in skein modules and link homologies. He is a 2010-2011 New Experiences in Teaching (NExT) Fellow, a program that supports faculty development at the national level through workshops and special sessions at the mathematics meetings.

Boerner, who joined the Westminster faculty in August, earned an undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
