Photographer to Present Talk and Share "Fearless" Exhibit

Photographer and activist Jeff Sheng will speak Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center. The program is free and open to the public.

The presentation will cover his work on controversial topics involving sexuality and the government; homophobia in sports; and his experiences working as an activist of color and an educator who teaches courses on ethnicity and homosexual issues. He will talk about his recent series "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," portraits of closeted U.S. service personnel affected by the policy, and his experiences in the creation of photographs taken over the last decade for various projects.

Sheng's current exhibit, "Fearless," will be on display on the second floor of Westminster's McKelvey Campus Center through Nov. 14. The photo series features high school and college lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athletes who are open about their sexuality.

Sheng teaches Asian-American studies and photography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He and his work have been profiled in numerous publications, television, and radio programs.

His visit is sponsored by Westminster's Allies, Student Government Association, First-Year Program, Office of Diversity Services, Art Department, Political Science and Sociology Department, and Sociology Interest Group.
