Posted on Monday, November 1, 2010

Four Westminster College senior mathematics majors and their adviser attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) regional conference and exposition Oct. 14-15 in Baltimore.

Dr. David Offner, Westminster assistant professor of mathematics, accompanied the students:

Joshua Beckert is a son of Arthur and Rebecca Beckert of Hookstown and a graduate of South Side Area High School.

Todd Changoway is a son of Bill and Eileen Changoway of Edinburg and a graduate of Mohawk Area High School.

Heather McQuiston is a daughter of Noreen McQuiston of Ellwood City and a graduate of Lincoln High School.

Megan Sherry is a daughter of Roger and Barbara Sherry of Bethel Park and a graduate of Bethel Park High School.

The students were exposed to a wide range of information about the mathematics teaching profession. They attended sessions on teaching specific subjects in algebra and geometry; using technology and manipulatives in the classroom; enhancing knowledge of school mathematics; and a special session for those entering the profession, where they met with pre-service teachers from other regional schools.

NCTM is the premiere national organization for mathematics teachers. The Baltimore conference drew more than 3,000 educators to network and discuss the latest topics in mathematics education.

Offner, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2009, earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.
