Planetarium to Present Spring Show

Posted on Tuesday, March 23, 2010

"Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope" will be presented over several dates in the coming weeks in the Westminster College Planetarium, room 116 of the Hoyt Science Resources Center.

Dr. Thomas Oberst, Westminster assistant professor of physics and director of the planetarium, will host shows at 7 p.m. March 25, 30, and April 1, 8, 13, 20, 27, and 29.

This series of presentations will mark the debut of the planetarium's new digital 360° dome projector.

Four hundred years ago, a simple adjustment to a child's spyglass revealed an infinite and perplexing universe. This program looks at today's great telescopes that gaze ever further into the distant past and into the future.

Rooftop stargazing will follow the shows, weather permitting.

The program is free and open to the public. However, reservations are necessary due to limited seating. Reservations can be made by contacting Westminster's Physics Department at (724) 946-7200 Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m-4:30 p.m., e-mail physics@westminster.edu, or complete the online form at www.westminster.edu/acad/phys/dept/planetarium.cfm.
