Math Students and Faculty Attend Regional Meeting

Posted on Monday, March 8, 2010

Two Westminster College junior mathematics majors participated in the 12th annual regional Student Paper Meeting Feb. 27, hosted by the Ohio XI Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon at Youngstown (Ohio) State University.

Stephen Donnell is a son of Paula Donnel of Evans City and Douglas Donnel of Warner Robins, Ga., and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.

Joshua Glasser is a son of David and Suzanne Glasser of Mansfield, Ohio, and a graduate of Lexington High School.

Donnel and Glasser spoke in a session on the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), an international contest designed to challenge student teams to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems.

They shared information about a mathematical model they created to determine the "geographical profile" of a serial criminal based on the locations of the crimes. Research for the model was conducted in collaboration with Westminster senior elementary education major and MCM team member Nikki Snyder.

Snyder is a granddaughter of Robert and Nancy Snyder of Kittanning and a graduate of Ford City High School.

Westminster mathematics faculty attending were assistant professors Dr. Natacha Fontes-Merz, Dr. David Offner, and Dr. Pamela Richardson.

The purposes of the meeting were to give undergraduate students the opportunity to listen to topics of interest to other undergraduates and to present results of their projects and research.
