Professor of Classics to Speak at Faculty Forum Feb. 24

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Dr. Dwight Castro, Westminster College professor of classics, will speak at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

In the late second century BC/BCE, the Roman Republic undertook a war against King Jurgurtha of Numidia. Castro's presentation, "'At Rome, Everything is for Sale': Foreign War and Domestic Politics in Late Republican Rome," will report on a monograph by the Roman historian Sallust that includes a narrative of the war, criticism of domestic politics, and the alleged corruption of prominent politicians.

Castro, who has been with Westminster since 1970, earned an undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College and master's and Ph.D. from Indiana University.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
