Professors Nominated for National Professor of the Year Recognition

Posted on Friday, February 5, 2010

Two Westminster College professors were nominated for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Professor of the Year program.

The program, sponsored by CASE and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, honors the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the U.S. It is the only national program to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

The nominations of Westminster's Kathy Koop, professor of art, and Dr. John Robertson, associate professor of biology, were submitted by Dr. Sandra Webster, professor of psychology and faculty development officer, and Dr. Jesse Mann, vice president for academic affairs and Dean of the College.

"Kathy Koop's unique combination of creativity, encouragement, one-on-one learning, and passion for educating the whole person is celebrated in this citation," Webster said. "Kathy is a an excellent model for other college faculty because of her openness to students' style of art and learning and her openness to the content of other disciplines as she integrates the liberal arts into art and life."

Koop, who joined the Westminster faculty in 1973, earned undergraduate and master of fine art degrees from Indiana University.

Mann described Robertson as "a consummate faculty member. He is an outstanding teacher. His dedication to his students is legendary-not only does he provide top-notch instruction in class, but he also provides hours of assistance in the lab and in evening review sessions."

"John Robertson is an 'outside the box' teacher," Webster added. "He involves his students in the community and the world through field trips, collaborative research, service-learning, and unusual integrations of content areas."

Robertson, who has been with Westminster since 2000, earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts, master's from the University of Rhode Island, and Ph.D. from Arizona State University.
