College Offers Spring Continuing Education Classes

Westminster College announces a variety of personal fitness, enrichment, and leisure courses for community residents. Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals. Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in four sessions: Session A runs from Jan. 25 through Feb. 19; session B runs from Feb. 22 through March 26 (no classes March 8-13); session C runs from March 29 through April 23; and session D runs from April 26 through May 21. Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Hatha Yoga stretches and strengthens muscles, joints, and spine; aids in healing; and improves strength, balance, respiration, and fitness level. Classes will be held Mondays, 6-7 p.m., during all sessions.

Beginner Bellydance welcomes all ages and genders to learn this dance that is easy on the body. Classes will meet Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., through all sessions.

Yoga improves physical and mental well-being through posture, balance, breathing, alignment, and relaxation. This class is designed for those new to the practice or for those who would like a refresher. It will be offered Wednesdays, 5:15-6:15 p.m. during all sessions.

Beginning Zumba introduces the four basic rhythms and offers modifications to increase or lower heart rate according to individual needs. The class will meet Thursdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18, and 25, 6-6:45 p.m.

Zumba routines fuse fitness with musical rhythms and Latin dance moves to create a dynamic workout that integrates fast and slow rhythms to tone and sculpt the body while burning fat. Winter/spring session will meet Saturdays through June 5, 10-11 a.m.

Line dancing will be held Thursdays, March 4, 11, 18, and 25, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in room 214 Patterson Hall.

Getting to Know Your Computer is an introductory class that will teach terminology and address the new environment of Windows 2007. The class will be offered Mondays and Wednesday, March 1, 3, and 8, and again Tuesdays and Thursday, May 4, 6, and 11.

Introduction to the Internet is offered Monday and Wednesday, March 15 and 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Learn to establish an e-mail address, attach a file, search the Internet, and copy and paste articles from the Internet.

Microsoft Word 2007 is scheduled Monday and Wednesday, April 5 and 7, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This course is designed for students who have some computer experience with typing and using the mouse.

Microsoft Excel I 2007 is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, April 12 and 14, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Learn formatting and other basic functions.

Microsoft Excel II 2007 is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, April 19 and 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Build on the skills learned in the previous class to make the most of Excel's useful, efficiency-boosting, time-saving features and functions.

Microsoft Powerpoint is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, April 26 and 28, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. This introductory class will teach how to use information from the Internet and how to insert, crop, and format pictures to create effective, professional-looking presentations.

Personal enrichment classes include nearly a dozen offerings this semester:

Memoir Writing will be held Mondays, March 22, 29, and April 12 and 19, from 6:30-8 p.m. at a location to be determined. Learn to record memories to pass on to future generations and how to handle writing about difficult subjects.

Polish Language 2 will be held Wednesdays, March 3, 10, 17, and 24, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. Learn conversational Polish language skills needed for travel and everyday situations. This class is designed for individuals with very little knowledge of the Polish language.

Jewelry Making 101 will be held Thursdays, March 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 6-7 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room. Learn the basics of stringing, wirework, and bead weaving to create a new piece of jewelry each week.

Tabletop Weaving is scheduled for Saturdays, March 20, 27, and April 10, from 9 a.m.-noon in McGill Library. Learn the basics of hand weaving, build your own frame loom, and weave a placemat or tapestry.

Environmentally Healthy Homes: Reducing Toxic Chemical Exposures will be held Tuesday, March 23, from 7-8 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room. The class will present the most recent information on toxic chemicals in the environment, explain why children are particularly vulnerable to harm from them, and share ways to reduce exposures.

Go Green Spring Centerpiece is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at a location to be determined. Recycle used artificial flowers and vines to create a new centerpiece.

Painting - Flowers, Pansies, and Leaves is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at a location to be determined. Learn to blend colors to create pansies and two types of leaves on a glass item.

Résumé Writing will be Tuesday and Thursday, April 6 and 8, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at a location to be determined. Learn to create or update a winning résumé by understanding what information to include, the importance of presentation, and how to write a cover letter that gets noticed. Tips on interviewing skills will complete the class.

Turning Your Technology Green: Things You Can Do Today to Cut Energy Bills and Reduce Your Carbon Output will be offered Monday, April 12, from 5-6 p.m. in the Audio Visual Services Department of the McKelvey Campus Center. Learn to responsibly cut energy bills, decrease the carbon footprint, and still get the technology needed every day.

Technology Myths: Real or Bunk? is scheduled for Monday, April 19, from 5-6 p.m. in the Audio Visual Services Department. Get an inside look at the technology behind home theater systems, hi-def television, iPhone, Blue-Ray movies, and PCs vs. Macs.

Go Green Patriotic Wreath is scheduled for Thursday, May 13, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at a location to be determined. Recycle an old grapevine wreath with new patriotic ideas.
