Chemistry Majors Receive Grant for Undergraduate Research

Gavin Buckholtz, a Westminster College junior chemistry major, and Emily Landis, a sophomore chemistry major, received undergraduate research grants from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Their research, "Microwave-Promoted Heck Reactions," is advised by Dr. Peter Smith, Westminster associate professor of chemistry.

Buckholtz is a son of Jeffrey and Julie Buckholtz of Franklin and a graduate of Cranberry Area High School.

Landis is a daughter of Carl and Janine Landis of New Waterford, Ohio, and a graduate of Crestview High School.

"An important component of the work of the Drinko Center is to enhance opportunities for undergraduate research," said Dr. Terri Lenox, Westminster College associate professor of computer science and co-director of the Drinko Center. "The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences."

All grant recipients have the opportunity to participate in Westminster's Undergraduate Research Symposium in April.
