Westminster College and Lawrence County Community Action Partnership to Sponsor Poverty Simulation Oct. 9

Posted on Monday, September 29, 2008

Westminster College's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and the Lawrence County Community Action Partnership will sponsor a poverty simulation Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center.

The afternoon session will be from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and the evening session is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Participants should plan to stay for the full length of the event. Both simulations are free and open to the public.

The simulation enables participants to view poverty from different perspectives in an experiential setting. Participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their independence on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities while interacting with various community resources.

"This is the second year the Drinko Center and the Community Action Partnership have hosted the poverty simulation," said Bethany South, the Drinko Center's assistant coordinator of civic engagement and service learning. "Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to participate in this enlightening event."
