Associate Professor to Speak on Mathematics and Magic

Posted on Monday, September 8, 2008

Dr. John Bonomo, Westminster College associate professor of computer science, will present "You Too Can Be a Mathematician Magician" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

Bonomo will illustrate how mathematics forms the basis for many magic tricks. He will analyze a well-known card trick and show how the underlying mathematics allows the trick to be extended in several interesting ways.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.

Bonomo, who has been with Westminster since 1998, earned undergraduate and master's degrees from Catholic University and Ph.D. from Purdue University.
