Westminster College Represented at Joint Mathematics Meetings

Westminster College was represented by three faculty mathematics faculty members and a senior mathematics major at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America held Jan. 6-9 in San Diego.

Dr. Carolyn Cuff, professor of mathematics and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, attended a minicourse on the mathematics of voting. Cuff, who has been with Westminster since 1989, earned an undergraduate degree from Westminster and a master's and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. John Bonomo, associate professor of computer science, presented "You Too Can Be a Mathematician Magician." He joined the Westminster faculty in 1998. He earned a joint undergraduate and master's degree from Catholic University and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Dr. Barbara Faires, professor of mathematics, presented "Building Reason, Baroque History and Mathematics" in the session on mathematics and the arts. She has been with Westminster since 1976. She earned an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University, a master's from the University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. from Kent State University.

Senior mathematics major Anna Sparacino was a co-presenter with Sara Jensen of Carthage College. "A Mathematical Model of the Evolution of the ABO Blood Group System" was a summary of their summer work in the National Science Foundation-sponsored program, Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

Sparacino is a daughter of Christopher and Sharon Sparacino of Verona and a graduate of Saint Joseph High School.
