Salzedo Harp Duo to Perform at Westminster College

Posted on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

The Salzedo Harp Duo will perform at Westminster College Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel.

Duo harpists Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn have performed together in harp ensembles and orchestras for 25 years. They share a similar educational background, studying with Alice Chalifoux at the Cleveland Institute of Music and at the former Salzedo School in Camden, Maine. Both Lendrin and Guinn hold principal positions in Ohio Orchestras.

Shortly after the duo was formed in 2000 in order to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, they were awarded a Mellon Foundation Grant, as coordinated by the Toledo Symphony, to research and prepare Salzedo's little-known duo harp repertoire for public performance. The duo's repertoire has expanded to include 20th century French composers as well as contemporary pieces.

The program features: Carlos Salzedo's "Tango," "Chanson dans la Nuit" (Song in the Night) and "Short Stories." It also includes: "Solfeggietto" by Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach; "Ava Maria" by Johann Sebastian Bach; "Dyades" by Bernard Andres; "Contra Y Retango" by Andres Carrizo; "Cueca" a Bolivian Folk Song; "Polka" by Jaques Press; "Claire de Lune" by Claude Debussy.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Westminster College Department of Music at (724) 946-7270.
