Westminster Student Receives Keystone Reading Association Scholarship

Posted on Tuesday, May 6, 2003

Jessica Henninger, a junior elementary education major at Westminster College, received the Keystone State Reading Association Scholarship.

"When I found out that my application was sent to the state level, I thought that was great and figured that was as far as it was going to go," said Henninger.  "So when I was notified that I won, it was a big surprise!  So many of the Westminster faculty, particularly the education department, has given me so much support and help.  I can see why I choose this school."

"We are proud to have nominated such an outstanding candidate," said Jennifer Green, vice president and scholarship committee chair of the Lawrence County Reading Council.  "We wish Jessica the very best in her teaching career.  When we received notification from the state, I was just as excited for her as if I had won the money.  This is tremendous news, and we just couldn't be happier for her."

According to Dr. Charlene Klassen Endrizzi, associate professor of education, Henninger is very active in her major.

"I selected Jessica to work on a Pennsylvania Department of Education state literacy grant at Connoquenessing Elementary in Butler," said Endrizzi.  "As a literacy assistant in the school's Read to Succeed Program, she quickly became an important member of our team as she worked closely with primary children who struggled with reading.  She also participated in a Family Literacy Evening where teachers and parents came together to discuss literacy concerns and issues."

"Jessica is working on her honors research project which focused on Visual Literacy,' and she is one of only three other students to complete an honors project in education over the past six years," continued Endrizzi.  "She challenges herself to exceed all course expectations, and it was a pleasure to work with such a dedicated learner."

Henninger is a daughter of Paul and Edna Henninger, 3112 Willett Road, and a graduate of Brentwood High School.
