Westminster College junior environmental science major, Erin Hassett, received the Helen R. Ferguson Scholarship for excellence in environmental science.

The award was presented on May 9 by the Bartramian Audubon Society at its award ceremony at Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Dr. Helen Boylan, professor of chemistry and coordinator of environmental programs, Dr. Kerri Duerr, assistant professor of biology, and Bradly Weaver, broadcast and media productions lecturer, attended the awards ceremony.

The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in environmental science who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of environmental science and education.

“The Environmental Science Committee selected Erin because of her passion environmental issues,” said Boylan. “Erin has been a dedicated worker at Westminster's Field Station for two years and has been an active member of the Tiny House Project team this semester.”

Hassett was also selected for an internship this summer with the Missouri Department of Conservation where she will be collecting stream and habitat data in addition to fish sampling via electrofishing.

Hassett is a daughter of Thomas and Joanne Hassett of Erie, Pa., and a graduate of Laurel High School.
