NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-- If you were to drive from Westminster College to the Beverly Hills headquarters of the Oscars in California you would drive 2,500 miles. According to YahooMaps, a driving trip would take you 40 hours across 10 states. However, for a 2005 Westminster grade the journey to the Academy Awards was a little less direct.
Tom Oyer is the awards office coordinator at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He presented the Distinguished Alumni Lecture at the 10th annual Undergraduate Research and Arts Celebration at Westminster in April. Oyer earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in film studies His job at the Academy has brought him full circle in the pursuit of film as an avenue for affecting and showing social change. WCN's Paden Jones talks one on one with Oyer about his journey from humble New Wilmington to working behind the scenes at the Oscars.
